What our families are saying:

Since enrollment, my strength has improved and I have better flexibility. I really enjoy having a great workout and learning how to protect myself. It has made me more confident! I also love all the new people I have met. This has been a great learning experience for all of us!“ M. Stephenson, parent and Kuk Sool Won student

“As a single Mom, I enrolled my son to give him confidence and discipline, but after seeing how fun the classes were, I joined myself. Not only have I lost weight and toned up, but I am learning valuable self defense skills as well.“ Norma Mendoza, parent and Kuk Sool Won student

It is NEVER too late to START! Get in shape TODAY!

What our students are saying: :

“I started Kuk Sool Won at the ripe old age of 51, feeling every bit my age.  After just a few months I began to notice improvement in my flexibility and stamina, not to mention the loss of body fat and fatigue.  After four years, I feel in better shape now than I did when I was 30“.  John Jacobs, student

“I’ve made great friends because it’s like a family here...I love the sense of community. I’ve only been here for three months, but it’s really made me feel better about myself“.  Teddy Triolo, adult student

Kids Classes

We have great classes for kids ages 5 - 13 years old.

There are many important benefits of Kuk Sool Won training:

  • Confidence
  • Better grades
  • Respect
  • Etiquette
  • Peer pressure avoidance
  • Healthy Habits

Our kids program is an education, not a sport. We teach to respect yourself and others and to do what is right. In our program, only positive reinforcement is used and no child sits on the bench. We encourage our students to live by the tenets of our student creed.

STUDENT CREED

I will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that will reduce my mental growth or physical health.

I will develop self-discipline to bring out the best in myself and others.

I will use what I learn in class constructively and defensively; to help myself and others and never be abusive or offensive.

We are a Black Belt school. We are motivated. We are dedicated. We are on a quest to be our best. KUK SOOL!

WHAT PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE SAYING:

“I like the fact that the boys and girls are treated equally—everyone is treated with the same amount of discipline and respect.” Sue Leslie, parent

“ My son had a severe stuttering problem that was unaffected by two years of speech therapy. Two to three months after joining the Kuk Sool Won classes and graduating to the second belt level, his speech was perfect, and it has been ever since.” Ken McKenney, parent

“I felt okay doing a demonstration in front of 500 people in a different city. Kuk Sool really helped my confidence.” Ashley Hallsted, 10, student

FAQs

Q: Do I have to be in shape to join a martial arts program?
A: Absolutely not. Martial arts is one of the best ways to get into shape. Don't wait, act now!

Q: Do I have to do jumping kicks?

Joseph Foster
Kwang Jang Nym
5th Degree Black Belt

I have been involved in the Martial Arts since 1979, and have been teaching martial arts since 1985.  The style I teach is a hard/soft traditional Korean Martial Art system called Kuk Sool Won.

I have taught all ages and have developed a rather unique teaching style for children's classes, with the understanding that the attention span of children is considerably shorter than that of the average adult, so the class must be broken up from time to time with game-like skills drills that relate to Martial Arts concepts.  Also, children think visually rather than verbally, so teaching examples must be developed differently than for the adult student.  I have also taught many self defense classes for Women, and have privately instructed police personnel in California.

  • 1979 - Began Martial Arts training in San Mateo, California
  • 1984 - Began training in Kuk Sool Won Korean Traditional Martial Arts under Masters Barry and Choon Ok Harmon
  • 1986 - Awarded 1st degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won by Grandmaster Suh
  • 1988 - Chosen as a member of the U.S. Kuk Sool Won Demonstration team to perform in Korea during the 1988 Olympics
  • 1988 - Featured on Movement Arts television program that showcases Martial Artists
  • 1989 - Awarded 2nd degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won by Grandmaster Suh
  • 1989 - Appointed by Grandmaster Suh as the Head Instructor of the Kuk Sool Won school in San Mateo, California
  • 1991 - Contacted by Mark Chestnut's management and entered negotiations for personal trainer/bodyguard
  • 1991 - Awarded 3rd degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won by Grandmaster Suh
  • 1992 - Accompanied Grandmaster Suh, the founder of Kuk Sool Won, on yearly seminar tour, teaching and demonstrating throughout the United States and Canada
  • 1993 - Appointed as Head Instructor at the World Kuk Sool Won Headquarters in Houston, Texas, teaching and training directly under Grandmaster Suh
  • 1995 - Received permission from Grandmaster Suh to open a Kuk Sool Won school in Baytown, Texas
  • 1996 - Awarded 4th degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won by Grandmaster Suh
  • 2002 - Appointed by Grandmaster Suh as Chief Instructor of the Kuk Sool Won school in the Woodlands, Texas
  • 2005 - Awarded 5th degree Black Belt (Master Level) in Kuk Sool Won by Grandmaster Suh
  • 2007 - Received permission from Grandmaster Suh to open Kuk Sool Won of The Woodlands, West location

John Jacobs, parent and Kuk Sool Won student

“Kuk Sool Won has been the best sport for my kids.  They have learned self-discipline, working with others and are in the best physical and mental shape they have ever been in (they even clean their rooms now).  Thank you for all you have done.”

Ashley Hallsted, 10, student

“Women are shown the ability and given the confidence to kick and strike.  The classes help to give you a strong sense of control and awareness of your body.”

Ellen Hallsted, parent and Kuk Sool Won student

“After moving back to the States from overseas, we decided to look for another martial art center for our son to continue his training.  We ended up switching from one martial art to Kuk Sool Won due primarily to the quality and caliber of the instructor and secondarily to the well-roundedness of this particular martial art.  Master Foster provides child friendly classes with much experience, wisdom, kindness and humor in an environment that is not only physically safe, but emotionally safe as well.  Our son has truly benefited from priceless life and physical skill training that will serve him in the years to come."

Parent of Kuk Sool Won student

"As a woman, I have desired to take a self defense class after I had experienced some uncomfortable situations.  When we enrolled our son, I decided to join because of the very nature of Kuk Sool Won.  Kuk Sool Won has a great combination of conditioning forms, hand techniques, and hand and foot strikes.  In my opinion, the hand techniques that are taught even the odds physically with any unfortunate confrontation that could arise in real life.  Six months into my training, I noticed that my core was stronger and I was physically able to do more than I was able to do before - including fingertip push-ups!  I am very grateful for the instruction given to me and consider myself blessed to have Kuk Sool Won incorporated into my life."

Gretchen Booth, parent and Kuk Sool Won student
